Pull follower growth history looking for sudden spikes (a red flag for purchased followers) and cross-check follower geography against the KOL's stated niche, a wallet-focused crypto account with a majority of followers from unrelated, unengaged regions is a signal worth investigating further.
Layer 2: Engagement Quality Check.
Engagement rate benchmarks vary by follower tier: nano accounts (under 10K) typically run 3–5%, micro accounts (10K–100K) run 1–3%, and macro accounts (100K–1M) run 0.5–1%, with rates below roughly 0.5–1% warranting a closer look depending on tier. We flag anything under 1.5% for macro-tier crypto accounts specifically, since crypto audiences tend to be more reply-heavy than general consumer niches when the engagement is real.
Layer 3: Comment Specificity Check.
Generic comments ("great project!", "LFG 🚀") clustered across a KOL's last 10 posts are a stronger fraud signal than engagement rate alone, because bots and engagement pods can now inflate rate without inflating specificity. Real crypto audiences reference the actual project, ask technical questions, or push back. Things that bots, in turn, are completely incapable of doing.
Layer 4: On-Chain Wallet Cross-Reference.
This is the layer most vetting checklists skip entirely, and it's the one that's specific to Web3. Before signing, we cross-reference a sample of a KOL's engaged followers against on-chain wallet activity to confirm the audience isn't just real, but it's also a crypto-active. What Red Flags Should You Look for Before Signing a KOL Contract?
The single clearest red flag is a KOL whose engagement rate doesn't move when you check their last 5 posts instead of their best 5.
A few more, in the order we see them most often:
Engagement rate that's suspiciously stable across every post, regardless of topic or timing, real audiences respond unevenly, bots don't.
A follower count that grew faster than the account's actual reach or reply volume over the same period.
No prior crypto-specific campaign history, or only campaigns for projects that no longer exist, a pattern worth checking against your trust framework for the broader market, since KOL fraud and project fraud tend to travel in the same circles.
Refusal to share past campaign performance data when asked directly, legitimate KOLs with real audiences are typically willing to share basic post-campaign numbers.
This applies most directly to macro-tier KOLs (100K+ followers), where the incentive to inflate is highest. Nano and micro-tier creators can still have fake followers, but the fraud economics are different, the checks in Layers 1 and 2 above still apply, just with tier-adjusted engagement thresholds.
How Do You Vet a KOL for a User Acquisition Campaign?
UA campaigns need one extra step beyond general KOL vetting: confirming the KOL's audience can actually complete the action you're optimizing for, a dApp sign-up, an app download, a testnet task, not just reading a post.
